It is always encouraging for me to step back and see how far I have come, even though there are seemingly endless set backs when it comes to recovering from a chronic condition. It helps being able to step back and see the progress.
What milestones did you hit this month? Let me know in the comments, or you can always comment on Instagram @avenlylaneinspire.
4/2/19 Milestone!! First video on Instagram with over 3,000 views.
4/6/19 MILESTONE Nephew’s Birthday! Actually did well
I did pretty well at the party. I got really tired after, but it was a blessing to be able to go at the end of a busy week.
4/8/19 MILESTONE! I drove myself to the Strip to meet a friend at the pool.
Loud music, lots of people, and I still did really well! I am thankful to be blessed with the ability to live a more normal life. My goal was to take it a step further by not wearing my noise cancelling headphones on.
Sometimes I give myself little challenges to help me feel like there is a purpose to pushing through the fatigue. It worked. I felt like I accomplished something that ultimately helps further my recovery.
4/9/19 MILESTONE! I drove myself to give blood and after went shopping. I felt great!
I hate giving blood. The last few times I gave blood I passed out and it took me days to recover. This time was different. After I laid in my car for about 30 minutes before feeling well enough to drive.
I was extra thirsty for the rest of the day, but otherwise I felt great!
With social media I have been scared to try new things. It is easy to get comfortable and continue doing the same things – even if you don’t like them anymore. I was not getting anywhere by doing the same things that people recommended.
Now I am doing my own thing. My plan is to constantly try new ways to reach more people. Here is the video if you are interested in checking it out.
First time in Taiwan – Travel Milestones
4/26 First flight with no medication (and in the morning!!) yay!
4/26/19 Recovered after a small breakdown after 30 hours of travel to Taiwan (Also, my longest flight segment on the front end of a trip! San-Fran to Taiwan is 13:45 flight)
My body completely shut down by the end of a REALLY long travel day to Taiwan. For the first time I was able to pull myself out of a state of horrible agitation. Normally it would just get worse and worse until I falling asleep (if I could even fall asleep) .This time it passed pretty quickly. Thank goodness.
4/27/19 First time using public transportation while traveling the entire day!
I was even able to stand on the metro. It was hard and there were so many times I wanted to sit down on the floor, but I was able to continue to stand (especially difficult with the crowds).
It may not sound like much, but this one was huge!
I know there were more milestones this month, but I did not record all of them. I need to do better!

A Message to the Chronically Ill – Why you Should Stop Blaming Yourself When you Have a Setback
Transcript – “Hey, It is 6:30 am and I haven’t slept all night, and it’s the first time I didn’t blame myself for it. And it feels good.
I don’t know why it has taken my this long to not blame myself. But, when your’e sick all the time and no one knows how to help you get better. And you have good days and bad days, you just can’t help but feel like it’s you.
Like there’s something you’ve done….”

Can you relate to this?
Let me know in the comments if you guys have any tips for overcoming self blame when it comes to long term illness or chronic illness.
Chronic Illness or Long Term Illness can be so discouraging. Especially when you spend years searching for answers and can’t find them. I know I am not a doctor or researcher but I do know what it is like to suffer from chronic conditions and am willing to share any and all of my story in the hopes that it will help someone else suffering from the same issues I was having.
I have been recovering for a few years and am doing so great now. I run a successful travel blog and instagram to document my travels.
Here is the timeline for the video so you can skip to the parts you are the most interested in.
1:28 – Story of what happened on April 1st and some of my symptoms and thought process while sick.
2:30 – The day I woke up and could walk again. (My real healing began)
If you are thinking, what the heck is a “rose hips” and why do I need them in my tea then you are where I was not too long ago.
What are the benefits of Rose Hips Tea?
Rose hips are loaded with Vitamin C, E, & K. Each of these vitamins can help with infections of your bladders, kidney’s, and sinus infections. Whenever I feel a cold coming on I always try to make sure to drink at least 3 of these Rose hips tea bags a day. I slowly sip on them with this mug throughout the day.
It has been a total game changer.
I was first introduced to Rose Hips Tea and it’s benefits by Anthony Willams. You can read his post on all the benefits of rose hips here.
Disclaimer – If you are looking for a fancy herbal tea recipe this post isn’t it. I really don’t like over complicating my tea recipes. I like things to be as simple as they possibly can be otherwise I know I won’t make it.
I never used to be a tea drinker. The only time I really put that much effort into making a drink is when I have hot chocolate. I usually like to stick to investing my time in creating more delicious desserts. But when I made a conscious decision to clean up my diet I always seemed to come back to herbal tea. I realized that the right herbal tea recipes can help keep me from snacking as much throughout the day and have become my go to natural remedy for viral infections and colds.
Here are my favorite healing herbal teas I drink regularly.
Note – I really don’t like over complicating my tea recipes. I like things to be as simple as they possibly can be otherwise I won’t make it.
When I make lemon balm tea I will usually buy the lemon balm extract to add to hot water and then squeeze a lemon in it. Warning – if you don’t squeeze a lemon in it it will taste bad. But with the lemon it tastes amazing. This is the lemon balm extract I always buy on amazon.
If you don’t want to mess with the lemons and lemon balm then I would just try the tea bags on Amazon.
You can also use 2 teaspoons of fresh or dried herb to 16oz of hot water. Steep for 10-15 minutes. Mix in a little raw honey or some fresh lemon to taste!
Dandelion Root Tea
This one has a very strong taste, and not in a good way. But it is really good for healing so I always try to keep it in the rotation.
Dandelion Root Tea Recipe Instructions:
2 teaspoons of dried dandelion root to 16oz of hot water. Steep for 10-15 minutes. Mix in a little raw honey or some fresh lemon to taste!
If you don’t want to make it with the raw loose leaf I recommend this one on amazon. It is the one I use when I want something faster.
Raspberry Leaf Tea
To make Raspberry leaf tea, pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1-2 teaspoons of dried or fresh herb and let steep for 10 minutes or more. Sweeten with raw honey if desired. Raspberry leaf can be found online or at your local health food store in capsule, tincture, extract, and tea form.
Chaga is a mushroom that is has extremely high levels of antioxidants and healing properties.
Chaga Tea Recipe Instructions:
Mix 1 teaspoon of Organic Chaga powder with 8oz of hot water.
The Most Refreshing Watermelon Smoothie Recipe You Will Ever Try
I like to keep my watermelon smoothies as simple as possible. With only 3 ingredients to worry about this recipe is so simple and so good.
All you need is watermelon (of course), mint leaves, 1 lime. Easy enough right? Let’s get into it.
Prep – There is a little prep involved. But don’t worry, it isn’t much. Once you have your watermelon cut it into squares and place them in a freezer bag to freeze. I like to use at least 2 cups of frozen watermelon and 1 cup of fresh watermelon.
2 cups frozen cubed watermelon
1 cup fresh watermelon
a few mint leaves to taste
Blend the watermelon in a nutribullet or blender of your choice and the water until smooth. Serve immediately.
You may be wondering “watermelon detox? Since when does watermelon actually detox the body?”
According to the Medical Medium “Watermelon is an excellent fruit that effectively hydrates, detoxifies, and cleanses the entire body on a cellular level.
It is rich in vitamins A and C as well as lycopene, beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin which are excellent for providing protection from lung, mouth, pancreatic, breast, prostate, endometrial, and colon cancer.”
Sounds good enough, right? But does it ACTUALLY work?
While I was recovering from a chronic illness that left me bedridden for 4 years (no kidding, for 2 of those years I couldn’t even sit up without passing out! It was rough.) I started a diet that was very high in fruit in an attempt to strengthen my immune system and recover from my illness. One of those fruits being Watermelon.
Looking back, it is hard to believe that I once actually tried to avoid eating too much fruit because I was told it was not good for my condition and it could make me feel worse. I was told it would feed my parasite infection (not true), it had much sugar (not true) and too many carbs making it harder to digest (also not true).
Following the advice of the Medical Medium I started adding copius amounts of fruits back into my diet. Including tons of watermelon.
It was pretty crazy how quickly I started seeing improvements in my health. I almost immediately overcame the recent infection that I had been battling for 6 weeks and started feeling stronger. I was able to go for walks outside and start running again! Yay!
Since then watermelon detox water and watermelon slushes have continued to be a staple in my diet.
Watermelon Detox Water Recipe:
Here’s how I make it.
Cut 4 watermelon cubes (works with frozen or fresh watermelon) and put it in a glass on filtered water.
Cucumber Detox Water – Best Detox Water For Weight Loss
I know cucumber isn’t very many people’s favorite fruit, and trust me, I get it. But drinking a glass of cucumber detox water can really help heal your body from the inside out.
Cucumber juice has huge beauty benefits from helping restore your hair, nails and even your dry skin! It really does work but consistency is key. you can’t drink it once a week and expect to see any results.
It needs to become a part of your every day diet in order for your to really see the benefits. Check out the recipe below and let me know in the comments if you have ever tired drinking cucumber water before?!
Note – I know a lot of people don’t like the taste of plain cucumber (my husband being one of them) so if that is the case I really recommend squeezing half a lemon in as well. Lemon water is super hydrating and will only help you shed those extra pounds even more!
Cucumber & Lemon Detox Water Recipe
Cut 1/3 of a cucumber into slices and put into a glass of filtered water. Squeeze half a lemon in if you do not like the taste of cucumber.
